Return to Monkey Island – Clever puzzles and bizarre situations ⭐4.6

Ron Gilbert’s surprising and exciting return to the Monkey Island series carries on the plot of the acclaimed adventure games The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, which were created in tandem with Lucasfilm Games.

Long had passed since Guybrush Threepwood and his archenemy, the zombie pirate LeChuck, last engaged in a cerebral duel. Guybrush is lost and unhappy since he never discovered the Monkey Island Secret, and Elaine Marley, his true love, has stopped caring about becoming a governor. Notable businessman Stan has been jailed for “marketing-related crimes,” Melee Island has deteriorated, and Captain Madison’s youthful, hip pirate leadership has ousted the old guard.

Chat with familiar faces and new acquaintances on familiar islands, now governed by perilous new figures. The next step is to set sail for uncharted waters in search of adventure and a way out of sticky situations. Only challenging riddles, outlandish scenarios, and lethal counterattacks stand between Guybrush and greatness.

In this updated take on the point-and-click adventure genre, daring pirates will use a smart reimagining of the controls from yesteryear to solve riddles and discover new islands. Pirates will have a blast with the game’s context-sensitive interactions, reactive dialog trees, and user-friendly inventory system.

Melee Island is a familiar spot that has just changed hands, and you’ll have to navigate your way around its sometimes-friendly bounds while avoiding the new bosses who are putting pressure on everyone. Set off on adventures to unexplored areas, where you may meet both friends and foes, such as the appropriately titled Terror Island and the eerie Brrr Muda outposts.

Musicians Peter McConnell, Michael Land, and Clint Bajakian (Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge), art director Rex Crowle (Knights & Bikes, Tearaway), and legendary series creator Ron Gilbert are all back for the latest installment in the Monkey Island series. Game co-writer Dave Grossman is also back.
